GREER

I take it all back. This is the most hideous thing I’ve ever seen, and I’d rather be eaten by a pack of nightmares than walk down the aisle in this monstrosity. Valen would never let me live it down. Even Dane might disown me, and I’m his fated mate.

Bastian would probably love it.

“It’s perfect,” Bianca says with no small measure of satisfaction.

I catch the salesgirl’s eye in the mirror, and she looks just as horrified as I do.

“I look like a marshmallow,” I deadpan.

The salesgirl tries to hide her giggle. “A pretty marshmallow.”

I like her.

“You look like royalty.” Bianca’s gaze sweeps over the tulle-covered affront to fashion. This bitch knows I look like the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man had a baby with every bad eighties dress ever made and then had a life-threatening allergic reaction that caused it to break out in boils. Because that’s what these beaded clusters all around the bodice remind me of.

She wants to humiliate me.

“Nope. Can’t do it.” I gag a little. Bianca is not amused, but I hide my face behind the puff sleeve that doubles as a privacy screen. “If I have to go through with this wedding, I’m going to get laid once it’s over. And if I wear this to marry Valen, his dick will shrivel and suck right up into his body, never to be seen again. And trust me when I say that would be a travesty of girthy proportions.”

That has the salesgirl barking out a laugh, but my mother is shooting daggers at me with her eyes. Tough shit. I’ve tried on at least twenty dresses now, and each was uglier and more outrageous than the last.

“If I may,” the salesgirl says, “there is one dress that I think you might both like.”

“I’d love to try it on,” I tell her before my mother can utter a denial.

The woman grins at me. “Wonderful. Let me bring it in.” Frankly, anything she suggests has to be better than the overdone puffballs my mother has picked out. And when she comes back with an elegant mermaid gown draped over her arms, my chest does a funny little hitch.

I haven’t enjoyed trying on these dresses. Despite the fact that I’m falling for Valen, nothing about this wedding has been our decision. We were told that we would marry each other, what the venue would be, who’d be invited, and what the menu would be. As far as dress shopping and cake tasting is concerned, I’m pretty sure Bianca is treating this as a form of torture more rather than caring to ask my opinion.

It’s a way for her to keep tabs on me. To make sure I’ll still go through with everything. Luckily for her, I’m genuinely starting to want to marry the man she and Theo thrust on me.

But this dress? It’s still long and white and I couldn’t fight in it to save my life, but it is beautiful. This dress is something I could feel beautiful in.

It’s relatively
